A requirement for our personal social media plan was to make a business page on Facebook. Ironically, a few days prior, my friend who is a marketing professional created a business page for my hair business. Within 17 days I received 87 likes to my page! I couldn't believe how fast my people started to like my page after I just posted one simple post on my personal page that invited people to like my business page.
I have learned about two very important things since having a business page. One is that you can have paid advertising on your page, yes, any business page. I can only imagine how much it helps to pay for advertisement on your Facebook page. A few students in my class have done so and it has yielded substantial results.
Another thing I have learned since having a business page is that I am able to connect with existing and potential clients in a way I was not able to without the page. I am excited to see what else I can learn from the opportunity of having a FREE business Facebook page.

Mobile Marketing
Throughout my marketing classes and marketing internship a popular subject is the idea of mobile marketing. We are learning in class that companies must concentrate their efforts in to converting their marketing tactics to be mobile friendly. We had a guest speaker in IMC class who worked in the marketing department for restaurant.com who said that 20% of the users who have accessed their company was by using their mobile device. This number has encouraged his team to work on their mobile friendliness.

It is known that people spend about 8 seconds on an advertisement before they lose interest. This is where the importance of mobile access comes in. If a customer visits a website that is not mobile friendly, they will spend a large portion of that 8 seconds zooming in and trying to navigate the non mobile friendly website.
Now, if the site is mobile friendly, they will be able to find what they need right away, wasting less of that 8 seconds. Our guest speaker told us it is more expensive to convert all of their webpages and advertisements to be mobile friendly, but the payoff is worth it. At my internship my boss works with a department that is converting the Fox Valley Park District websites to be mobile friendly, but she is the one that has to test and approve the changes.

Social Media Marketing- NICHE=MORE REACH!
One common theme I have heard over and over in my social media marketing class as well as in my internship is the emphasis on the niche marketing. Dr. Leila Samii reiterated several times throughout her presentation how important she belies marketing toward a niche market is better than a broad one. She didn't go into much detail about why she is a firm believer in small niche markets, but after learning this in my internship as well, I have a pretty good understanding of it.
The topic of niche markets came up at my internship recently. It was brought up by my boss when she was training me on how to use Constant Contact. She said that the more niche the market, the more likely the e-blast will be opened by the recipient. The email blasts sent to 30,000 plus email addresses had a much lower open rate than e-blasts sent to a small group. E-blasts about something niche such as a holiday craft show had a much higher open rate because the people being targeted by the email are genuinely interested in the information being sent to them.

What I have learned about niche markets has me thinking about how I want to make my personal brand more niche since small business and marketing is incredibly broad. I will have to brainstorm ideas that will make me stand out as a unique amongst the thousands of business administration and marketing graduates.
